Obituary of Rev. Jacob Lee Downing
Jacob Lee Downing, was born May 29, 1926, to Daisy nee` Jackson and Johnson Downing of Hertford, North Carolina. He departed this life on Saturday, January 8th 2011 at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center, City Campus.
Mr. Downing moved to Atlantic City in 1950, after marrying Lillie Beatrice Bembry. He found employment with the Abbotts Dairy Plant on the production line where he worked for many years. After the Atlantic City plant closed, he found other steady jobs and also owned his own his moving and hauling business for five years. He then worked at the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall as a houseman until casinos came to Atlantic City. Then when the Chalfonte-Haddon Hall made the transformation to become Resorts International, Mr. Downing proudly became one of Resorts' first employees. He stayed at Resorts until his retirement in 1991.
Always a religious man, Jacob found a calling as a preacher. He preached at many local churches. He was best loved for his healing prayers and his inspirational readings from the Bible. After many years of spreading the Gospel, Reverend Downing became an Ordained Minister in the Holy Temple Church of God in Christ in Atlantic City. Reverend Downing will be best remembered for always having a smile on his face and a joke to tell.
He was a member of Holy Temple Church of God In Christ in Atlantic City, NJ where he attended for nearly twenty years.
After the death of his first wife, Lillie, Reverend Downing met and married Barbara Chopping. Together, they joined New Mount Calvary Church in Mays Landing so that they could worship together closer to their new home.
When Barbara died, Reverend Downing joined New Hope Baptist Church of Atlantic City, where he attended regularly for ten years and where he served on the Ministerial Board until is death on January 8th 2011.
Reverend Downing leaves to cherish fond memories: five daughters, Gloria J. Martin of Irvington, New Jersey, Florence A. Wright (Anthony) of Somers Point, New Jersey, Linda Downing Seay, of Rivera, Florida, Terry Downing-Harris (Michael) of Randallstown, Maryland, Darlene L. Henderson (Vance) of Egg Harbor City, New Jersey; four sons, Jacob S. Downing, Jr. (Vivian) of Atlantic City, New Jersey, Dennis R. Downing, (Ernestine) of Pemberton, New Jersey, Ronnie W. Downing, (Kim) of Atlantic City, New Jersey and Michael T. Downing, (Marlene) of Somers Point, New Jersey; two brothers, Bishop William Downing, of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Charles Downing of Hertford, North Carolina; sister, Anne Shannonhouse (Tiny), of Hertford, North Carolina; eight grandchildren, Lisa Ash, Deana Taylor, Genese Martin, Anessa Seay, Terrance Henderson, Travis Henderson, Craig Downing and Brian Downing; a host of great-grandchildren; and many other family and friends.
