Obituary of William Augustus Weekes
William Augustus Weekes, 75 – a resident of Atlantic City, passed away on Wednesday, February 3, 2010, at AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center in Atlantic City. He was born June 13, 1934, to Hallie (Fisher) and William Augustus Weekes in Atlantic City, New Jersey. The only son out of four children, William attended Atlantic City Public Schools. He served in the Navy during his early adult life, and settled back home in Atlantic City where he met and married his soul mate, Ellastine Vermell Weekes (Simms). Their wonderful union produced nine children. A devoted husband and father, William was a hard-worker all his life. He was a prep cook at The Ranch House on the Boardwalk, worked for the City of Atlantic City in addition to various other jobs throughout his life. His last employer was the Atlantic City Convention Center, where he worked for years and even came out of retirement to work again part-time. "Bill" as his friends called him, was known as the "man of all trades" at the Convention Center; juggling many tasks to ensure the trade and convention shows ran smoothly. For many years he played an integral part of the Miss America Organization as the Production leader when the pageant was hosted each year in Atlantic City. "Pluggie", affectionately called by his family and close friends, was a member of St. Augustine Church of Atlantic City. He loved riding his bike daily, watching western movies, and was an avid sports fan (especially boxing) where he collected sports memorabilia. With his charismatic personality and winning smile, people were easily drawn to William – he was truly a people person. His love for his wife and family were unconditional; as they were most important in his life. He was predeceased by his parents, William & Hallie Weekes; two sisters: Gwendolyn (Tootie) Weekes Rahner and Doris V. Weekes; and two grandchildren: TJ Weekes and Ronald Washington; and close friend, Donald Burnside Sr. Mourning his loss are his beloved wife of 53 years, Ellastine Weekes (Simms) of Atlantic City; his devoted nine children: Wayne M. Johnson and his wife Brenda from Atlantic City, Ronald E. Simms of Atlantic City, Tanya Rodriguez of Mays Landing, Patrice (Surayyah) Johnson of Galloway, Anthony L.
