Please share a memory of Josephine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
On Thursday, January 7, 2010, Josephine Thomas quietly and peacefully departed this life. Josephine was born to Louise E. Williams and Molly V. Williams on October 21, 1928, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She attended the Philadelphia public schools and graduated from West Philadelphia High School. In 1949, she married James E. Thomas, Jr., "the love of her life." From this union their only son, James E. Thomas, III, (affectionately known as "jim-Jim") was born. From her early years, Josephine always had a special interest in modeling, fashion, and the entertainment world. She enjoyed the limelight of such events as singing, fashion shows and received much notoriety for participating in the "Miss Fine Brown Frame" and "Miss Sephia" contests. During her many years as a "mixologist", Josephine became a legend in both Philadelphia and Atlantic City for her witty personality and exquisite taste in fashion. Josephine brought her warm smile and friendly conversation to her loyal customers in such establishments as Wylausing Inn, Wash's Inn, Yacht Club and the world famous Club Harlem, where she became friends with many celebrities, whom were always welcomed in her lavish beachfront home with the magnificent ocean view. After returning from the Hickory House in Atlantic City, she loved to host barbecues, birthday parties and family reunions. In August of 2009, Josephine became ill and relocated to Philadelphia to be closer to family. Her health declined and she was reunited with her husband and son. Josephine will be sadly missed by her family, friends and all whose lives she touched. She is survived by: one brother, Donald Williams and wife, Katherine; sister, Loretta Harding and husband, Warren; sister-in-law, Phyllis Thomas; daughter-in-law, Gail Thomas; and a host of nieces and nephews.
