Obituary of Lillie Mae Coles
Lillie M. Coles, was born February 20, 1924, in Hickory, North Carolina. She moved to Atlantic City from Baltimore in 1941 where she raised her family. She was employed for 17 years as a nurse for the Atlantic City Medical Center and by King David Nursing Home.
She was a devoted wife of 68 years to John Howard Coles and a dedicated and loving mother to her family and friends. Next to god, the most important element of her life was the cohesiveness of her family. Lillie often extended her love to other children of whom she brought to live with her giving them the tools to be productive individuals in life. Called simply "Mom" by all, she became the center and difference in the lives of youths and adults from everywhere. She was a mother to all and greatly respected by those who were blessed enough to be in her presence.
Lillie enjoyed working in her garden and loved the beauty of fresh flowers. She enjoyed taking long walks on the Boardwalk for exercise, cooking, baking and serving her family desserts every night after dinner.
She leaves to cherish her memories: her son, Richard Coles (Beverly); four daughters, Barbara Wallace (John), Shirley Ashton, Patricia Winstead, and Deborah Cornelius (David); twenty-four grandchildren; thirty great-grandchildren; and nine great-great grandchildren. She was predeceased by her husband, John Howard Coles, and two sons, Charles "Butch" and John "Johnny".
