Obituary of Gwendolyn O. Haughton

Please share a memory of Gwendolyn to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Obituary / The Life of Gwendolyn Haughton Gwendolyn Haughton, age 97, lovingly called "Gwen", "Sisilyn", and "Nanny", went home to be with the Lord on November 12, 2022. She was born in Lower Buxton, St. Ann, Jamaica on September 5, 1925, to Satira and Lester Haughton. As a product of the Lower Buxton Elementary School, Gwen learned Home Economics which led her to become a great cook. These domestic skills led to a wonderful career starting in Jamaica and then in the United States, from 1968 until 2004, when she became too ill to work. In June 2004, Gwen was admitted to the Meadowview Nursing Home in Northfield, New Jersey, where she lived up to the time of her passing. This was hard for her and the family, but as time went by, she adjusted well, accepted it as 'home' and lived a good rest of her life there. Her shared interests and activities were the basis of forming friendships among residents and members of staff. Gwen became a mother to five children -- three girls and two boys. During her active domestic life, she worked with the Vaz Family in Jamaica and the Simon Family in the United States. She became a part of their families, nurturing the children and grandchildren of the Vaz and Simon families. She was afforded the opportunity to travel with the families to many different countries. Besides being a great cook and nanny, she was the adoptive mother to many Jamaicans who she met in Atlantic City. To sum it all up she was loving, caring, loyal, outgoing, honest, sociable, and friendly. Her hobbies were playing bingo, cooking, entertaining family and friends, shopping, collecting, and doing word search puzzles. She loved clothes, hats, and jewelry. If there was a birthday celebration – whether it was hers or yours – it did not matter. Gwen would have a great time celebrating. She just enjoyed life. Gwen went through many health issues during the last years but always managed to 'come through' with a smile of victory. In May of 2022, she was given the Last Rites as the doctors ordered, but it was not until six month later that God's order was final. Her last breath was taken on November 12, 2022. Gwen was preceded in death by: her parents, Satira and Lester Haughton; siblings, Lloyd, Myrtle, Lolita and Bernetta Haughton; children, Eugene Edwards and Nola Brown; grandsons, Cedric Green, Patrick Clarke and Errol Morris; and great-grandchildren, Melissa Green and Ashane Green. She leaves to cherish her memory: sister, Yvonne Cover; brothers, Glanville Haughton and Nueville Haughton; daughters, Norma Mullings and Evette Stranchan; son, Ridley Haughton (Vivette); nieces; nephews; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; great-great-grandchildren; the Vaz and Simon families; her Meadowview family and many others. Gwen, you're gone but not forgotten All pain and grief is over Every restless tossing passed And you're now at peace Sorrowfully submitted The Family. Funeral services will be 11AM, Saturday, December 17, 2022, Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church, 801 North Main Street, Pleasantville, New Jersey, where friends may call from 9AM. Interment to follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville, New Jersey.
