Obituary of Alma Y Dobson

On September 8, 2022, God spoke and said, "Greetings Alma and welcome to my kingdom. Well done my good and faithful servant." Alma Omega Young Dobson, the 7th child of a large, loving family, was the last of the immediate line. Alma was predeceased by: her parents, Lester and Maxi; siblings, Maxine, Harry, Charles, Jean Joe, and her closest, dearest brother Byron (survived by wife, Peggy). Rest assured they are waiting to receive her. She met the love of her life, Teddy Dobson, on the first day of college. Teddy knew at first sight she would be his wife. Alma was welcomed with open arms by Mother-In Law, Helen, Father-in Law, "Duke", sister-in-law, Arline, and brother-in-law, Arthur (survived by wife, Mary). She could always count on help from Aunt Gertie. From that union three children were born, Andrea, Sherryl, and Byron. Her story at Asbury United Methodist Church is the same as many members: some were baptized as children, some by marriage and some by choice. Alma came to the church by marriage. Her new family were lifelong members of Asbury and naturally she joined. She found love and acceptance among the congregation. She became a Sunday school teacher, Vacation Bible school teacher, part of the Wesleyan Service Guild, Young Adult Fellowship, Auxiliary to the Trustees, an active Stewart and a certified Lay Speaker. These groups helped build relationships among the people of Asbury, but more importantly it helped her learn more about Methodism and the structure of the church. Upon graduation from Glassboro State Teachers College, she worked for the Atlantic City Public School system, as a teacher, reading specialist and administrator, eventually retiring in 1993. After retirement, she served on the Atlantic City School Board. Alma heard God's call and began her journey in ministry, attending John Wesley Seminary. Upon completion, she was assigned to several churches in Atlantic County. Her last assignment was at Asbury United Methodist Church. The love continued to grow with the addition of grandchildren: Amber, Sanatoria, Isaiah, Anthony, Karrington, and Chance and great-grandchildren: Jazlynn, Isaiah, Abagail, Natalie, Josiah, and Kenneth. The Dobson household was the central point for holidays, summer gatherings and just a place of love. Nieces and nephews, Archie (deceased), Karen, Bonita (deceased), David, Leslie, Jeremy, Jessica, Arthur, Adrienne, and Shanika found love and a place of safety with their Aunt Alma. Spouses, Michael, Cornelia, Laurie, Russell, Nancy, and David, all held a special place in Alma's Heart. There were special friends in Alma's life who were just like family, including: Vonnie and Ronald Jordan, Betty Lloyd and Mary Bew, Claudette and Ernest Yancy, Devolia and Marven F. Hill, Carolyn Pendelton, Gloria and Cliff McWhorter and Juanita Johnson. With each interaction with Alma, all of our lives have been enriched. We will always remember her sweet desserts, patience, and loving counsel. A Homegoing services will be 11AM, September 15, 2022 at Asbury United Methodist Church 1215 Pacific Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey where friends may call from 9AM. The repass will occur immediately following the service in the church's fellowship hall. Arrangements entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Homes, Atlantic City, where condolences may be left at www.greenidgefuneralhomes.com.
