Obituary of Helen Friday
Helen (nee' Hyman) Friday, 85 of Galloway Township, New Jersey left the physical dimension on June 23, 2022. Affectionately known as "Mama," "Granny," or "Sister Friday," Helen was born December 8, 1936, to Rebecca (nee' Dinkins) and Willie Hyman in Marion, South Carolina.
Helen relocated to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania where she met her husband, Leonard Friday. From this union four children were created – Timmy, Reva, Larry, and Nikki.
When the family moved to Pleasantville, New Jersey's Broad Street, Mama established an open door and open arms policy for the neighborhood. She fed everyone who came through her door. She checked on their well-being and provided comfort to any troubled soul.
Granny was a devoted Witness for Jehovah. She enjoyed the congregation of brothers and sisters at the meetings, in assemblies or witnessing in the field. As a faithful servant of Jehovah, Sister Friday loved to speak of Jehovah's love and truth.
In Helen's earlier years of work to help support her family, she was employed by: Woolworth's Department Store and Homestead Nursing. Helen worked for the Pleasantville Board of Education as a cafeteria worker. She also worked for Rickel's Department Store part time and Pleasantville's Summer Recreation Camp during the summers.
Mama enjoyed the simplest pleasures – spending quality time with her family and friends; shopping at Boscov's, eating fried chicken, Italian subs with "extra" onions (her secret was to ask for "a lot of onions," that way they didn't charge her for "extra" onions), and we cannot forget how she loved fried fish sandwiches.
Mama leaves behind mountains of memories and a void in our hearts that cannot be filled. Those who will forever cherish those memories are: her children, Larry and Nikki Friday; grandchildren, Tim and Crystal Engram, D. L. Engram, Howard and Ishmael Winters, Larrysiah and Ajalake Friday, Yasmeen Watts and Daniel Watts, Jr.; brother, Willie "Babo" Hyman; sister, Rebecca Hyman; sons-in-law, Dallas Engram, Jr. and Daniel Watts; extended family, Angie Avant, Al & Debbie Morgan, Jaret and Tanya Dixon, Sonya Davis, Sherri Parmenter, Vince Friday and Monique Sloan; and a host of nephews, nieces, great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren; and a host of other family and friends.
Mrs. Friday is predeceased by: her parents, Rebecca and Willie Hyman; husband, Leonard Friday; son, Timmy Friday; daughter, Reva Engram; siblings, Annie Mae Gilliard, Emma Ruth Green and McArthur Hyman.
Family and friends are invited to attend a visitation from 2PM until 4PM, Saturday, July 2, 2022, Greenidge Funeral Home, 301 Absecon Boulevard, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where condolences may be left at www.greenidgefuneralhomes.com
