Obituary of Shirley Yvonne Smith

Shirley Yvonne Lewis (affectionately known as Big Mama) transitioned from this world, into the presence of the Lord on March 28, 2022. She was born December 24, 1944 in Seneca, South Carolina to her parents (late) Rosa M. and (late) Sam Lewis Sr.. She was one of 5 children, her siblings: Gaynell Lewis-Webb (deceased), Sammy Lewis Jr. (deceased), Lillie Lewis (deceased), Ida Lewis and Thomas Hoover. Ms. Shirley loved her family, and enjoyed the adventures that she shared with her siblings during their childhood. Her family attended Mountain Spring Baptist Church. She went to Blue Ridge High School where she was an outstanding, Honor Student, and she was also an ace basketball player. Ms. Shirley also attended Orangeburg State College where she obtained her Bachelor's Degree in Social Work. At the age of 16, Ms. Shirley moved to Pleasantville, New Jersey. In 1961, Shirley was wed in holy matrimony to (late) Stanley B. Smith Sr. The Lord blessed their union with 3 children Stanley Jr. (deceased), Gail, and Shirley. She and her husband were married for over 30 years until his demise in 2001. The Smiths provided a very loving and stable home for their family. Mrs. Smith was employed as a Fraud Investigator with the Atlantic County Welfare Office for 38 years. She also was Union President of ASCME Local 2302. She was a member of the Coalition of Black Trade Union (CBTU) and Council 71. She was also a Retail Manager at Spencer's Gifts and Two Guys Department Store. Mrs. Smith was not afraid of hard work, because she enjoyed the benefits that it reaped. She traveled often for her job, and also for pleasure. She was a world traveler who explored exotic places like Hawaii and Africa. She also enjoyed shopping, and acquiring the finer things in life. Big Mama also loved nature, she even cultivated and grew her own strawberry patch. Big Mama also loved to cook; her macaroni and cheese was renowned amongst family and friends. While attending a Revival at Morning Star Holiness Church (Egg Harbor Township, NJ)., she dedicated her life to the Lord. On Mother's Day, that year, she was also ordained as the Church Mother of Strong Tower Ministries Inc. Mother Shirley was also an active member on the Usher's Board. On her final Sunday, before the Lord called her home, she proudly worked and served as an usher during the worship service; rarely taking a seat-she didn't miss a beat. She also enjoyed attending "Bible School" and hearing the preached Word of God. Mother Shirley was an extremely friendly and outgoing person. She was a "social butterfly" with the "gift of gab." She was extremely thoughtful and generous. She loved to bestow gifts upon those who celebrated a birthday, anniversary, or any other celebratory life event. She especially loved her family, and always reminded them about the importance of maintaining a strong family bond.
