Obituary of John Edward Paxton, Sr.

John Edward Paxton, Sr, 84, of Winslow Township, New Jersey, a former lifelong resident of Atlantic City completed his earthly journey on February 23, 2022. John was born December 5, 1937, in Atlantic City, New Jersey to the union of Joseph Paxton and Nancy Theresa (nee' Coston). "Big John" or "Johnny" as he was affectionally known to lifelong friends, attended Atlantic City Public Schools and graduated from Atlantic City High School with the Class of 1956. He served as the true lighthouse for so many, always saying a hello or sending along his birthday wishes. After graduating from Atlantic City High School, John proudly served his country in the United States Army as a distinctive member of the Army Security Agency as a Baumholder and earned an honorable discharge. He enrolled at Santa Rosa Junior College where he briefly played basketball until an ankle injury sidelined him. While recovering from ankle surgery, he met Eddie Mae and they were married for 56 years. To this union were born three children Nancy, Elizabeth and John Jr. "Big John" had a long fulfilling career as a mail carrier for the United States Postal Service. He retired in 1992. He also worked as a security guard at the Atlantic City Race Track. In his spare time, "Big John" was avid bike rider along the Atlantic City Boardwalk. Some even got to calling him "the Mayor of the Boardwalk" as he spent so much time there and knew so many of the folks along "The Boards". He spent many years coaching and supporting the girls' basketball teams from St. Nicholas Parochial and Atlantic City High School. John was a Shriner, a Mason, an Asa Baumholder and a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers all of which he was an active contributor. John also enjoyed spending time with his classic 1969 Pontiac Grand Prix. "Big John" could be described as both frugal and generous although his beloved might say "stingy." His greatest humanitarian gesture was his many years of blood donations that generated over 50+ gallons. John was preceded in death by: his parents Joseph and Nancy T. Paxton. He is survived by: his wife, Eddie Mae Paxton; his daughters, Evangelist Nancy Paxton, Dr. Elizabeth Weekes (Colin); Deacon John Edward Paxton, Jr. (Nora); brother, Joseph Paxton; sisters-in-law, Mary Johnson, Rachel Dixon, Virginia Dixon and Mary Lee Dixon; beloved granddaughters, Emma Mae and Sofia Elizabeth Paxton; beloved grandson, Isaiah Miles Hayes Weekes; along with host of other nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends. Funeral services will be 11AM, Saturday, March 5, 2022, at New Hope Baptist Church, 706 Lexington Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where friends may view from 9AM to 11AM. Interment to follow in Lincoln Memorial Park, Mays Landing, New Jersey. Arrangements are entrusted to Greenidge Funeral Homes, Atlantic City, where condolences may be left at www.greenidgefuneralhomes.com.
