Obituary of Doretha Beatrice Gilliam

Doretha B. Gilliam, 83, departed this life on February 19, 2022, at her residence in Pleasantville, New Jersey. She was born in Windsor, North Carolina to Adelaide Bond and Henry Carter. Doretha attended school in Windsor, North Carolina, and graduated from W. S. Etheridge High School in 1956. She moved to Atlantic City, New Jersey, and married her sweetheart, Johnie L. Gilliam Sr. Doretha was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She exemplified Proverbs 31:10 -- "A Virtuous Women". She devoted her life to helping others. Her passion was loving on children. She worked at the Atlantic Human Resources, Head Start Program. She held various positions at Head Start as a teacher's assistant, cook, and bus driver for more than 30 years. She was a faithful and God-fearing woman. She devoted her special love and talent in serving Jesus and served on the Usher Board, President of First Lady Ministry, and the Hospitality Committee of her churches. Doretha was a sweet, devoted woman who loved life and God's people. She saw the best in everyone and everything. God saw her dedication and love and wanted His child with Him to continue the work in Heaven. Doretha parted this life, leaving those who loved her: husband of 62 years, Johnie L. Gilliam Sr.; children, Johnie Gilliam Jr., Andrea (nee' Gilliam) Townsend, Christopher Gilliam, Bernadette (nee' Gilliam) Moore; grandchildren, Le'Von Jackson, Criselle Melton, Dorsara Bishop, Christopher Bishop, Malcolm Townsend, Chelsea Moore, Marcus Townsend, Issiah Gilliam, and Brandon Moore; 13 great-grandchildren; and a host of other relatives and friends. Our love for her will live on in our memories forever. A Mass of Christian Burial will be 11AM, Friday, February 25, 2022, at Our Lady Star of the Sea Roman Catholic Church, 2651 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City, where friends may call from 10AM. Interment to follow in Mount Calvary Cemetery, Egg Harbor Townhsip, New Jersey.
