“The Leaf”
By
D. Levin S.
Every single one of us knows how it will be,
When our time has ended and like a leaf, we fall from a tree,
Having braved the elements from season to season,
Holding on to that branch of life for a reason,
To see who we once were and what we have become,
Watching as our children grow up living life and having fun,
Learning about having a long life praying that it is not brief,
So that they too will not fall from the tree like an old forgotten leaf,
Entrusting the knowledge that helped us remain strong,
Using our stem as an anchor over that fight over right and wrong,
Until we could hold on no more and drop to the ground,
Knowing that when this happened there would not be even heard a sound,
But the leaves that remained alive upon the tree,
Would look down upon the ground and always remember me,
For the leaf that I am had shown them the way,
To live laugh and love every hour of every single day,
A message that only a leaf could show,
Even as the leaf I now lay dormant in the snow,
But alas my end was not at all what it had seemed,
As the leaves still on the tree awakened from their evening dreams,
They found out the leaf I am caused a new tree to form,
Nothing new in the idea of evolution just the norm,
With a little more sunlight and wind and some rain,
The knowledge I had shown other leaves began to sprout and grow again,
And as a new tree was formed and as they gazed down upon me in disbelief,
They then recognized that to them I was more than just an old dying leaf,
I was the legacy of one tree destined to produce so much more,
As they learned that a dying leaf still enhances what other leaves live for,
To create something more beautiful than what they ever knew,
Something that stands tall and shades the sun for a cool spring view,
So should you ever wonder about me and wander around with grief,
Recognize and understand there is nothing more nurturing than an old single leaf.
