Obituary of Estelle Mugar Shockley

Estelle Mugar Shockley was born May 6, 1923, in Lakewood, New Jersey, to the late Reverend John Alexander and Lessie George. She departed this life on Monday, December 13, 2021, surrounded by her loving family. Estelle was a lifelong Lakewood resident. She graduated from Lakewood High School in 1940 and attended Monmouth Junior College for a year before her schooling was interrupted by the outbreak of World War II. During her journey, Estelle worked in Newark, New Jersey where she performed defense work. She met and married the late Joseph S. Brown, moved to the Bahamas, where she lived for five years and returned with four children. Upon her return to the United States, Estelle initially pursued a career in Beauty Culture (cosmetology). However, she was drawn by her childhood dream to be a nurse and graduated from the first nursing class of Ocean County Vocational/Technical School in 1959, as a licensed practical nurse. Estelle worked in the capacity at the Point Pleasant Hospital for 10 years before deciding to pursue an associate degree in Nursing which she received from Ocean County College, Toms River. She attended college along with two of her children while still employed at the hospital. While working she was a Charge Nurse on the Post-partum floor of the Obstetrics department, a Certified Childbirth Educator, and Team Captain of the "Tradition and Vision', a fund-raising program for the expansion of the Brick Hospital. She was a Charter member of the Concerned Black Nurses of Central New Jersey, she was also a subscribing life member of the N.A.A.C.P., and the Tau Delta Phi Sorority. She retired as a Registered Nurse in 1996. During retirement, Estelle enjoyed traveling, spending quality time with family and friends, and shopping trips. Estelle married Armand Shockley on May 15, 1960. Their union was blessed with 44 years until his death in 2004. A very important part of Estelle's life was her lifelong affiliation with Bethel A.M.E. Church, which was founded and built by her late father Reverend George. As a member, she served in many capacities, Church Conference Delegate, Organist, Steward Board, Missionary. She was awarded a plaque for being the oldest longest attending member. At the time of her death, she served as Church Mother. Estelle lived by this philosophy: "Trust God, Don't Worry". She treated everyone as she wished to be treated. She believed human needs are the same since the beginning of time; fulfill them with love and understanding. She was predeceased by her loving Husband Armand Shockley, Sons, Kenneth Brown and Melvin Brown, parents, Reverend John Alexander George and Lessie George, Brothers Booker George, John Edward (Eddie) George, Arthur George, Harold George, Robert George, Sisters, Jessie George, Edna Cawthorne, Carol Sutton, Naomi Barnes, Dorse Bolson, and Ruth Douglas.
