Obituary of John D King

Dr. John D. King was born in Raeford, North Carolina, on June 15, 1948, to Armellia Gibson and Raymond, Sr. He went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, August 1, 2021, at AtlantiCare Reginal Medical Center Mainland Campus. "J.D." as he was affectionately known was educated in the local schools in Columbus, Georgia and earned his Bachelor's degree from Central State University in Wilberforce, Ohio. He later attended and graduated from Kennedy Western University, where he earned his Doctorate in Psychology. J.D. also received special training in chemical, forensic and psychological counseling. In 1967, J.D. met Sarah Martin at Wilberforce University in Wilberforce, Ohio. They fell in love and married on August 22, 1970, in Philadelphia. The newly wedded couple moved to Springfield, Ohio, where Sarah taught in the Springfield public school system while J.D. finished his college education at Central State University. In 1974, J.D. and Sarah moved to Pleasantville, New Jersey, where they began their family. Dr. King worked at Narcotic Addict Rehabilitation Center Organization (N.A.R.C.O.), which is known today as John Brooks Recovery Center, for many years. He also worked for: Upward Bound Program, Minister's Home Detention Project, Amethyst Personal Growth & Counseling Services LLC & ASAP Agency, where he helped to change the lives of many troubled children. J.D. was a member of Second Baptist Church in Atlantic City, New Jersey. During the summer months, J.D. could often be found barbecuing ribs in his backyard. He was also well known for his "fried chicken" that was requested at every event. J.D. and Sarah enjoyed traveling and did so extensively throughout the world. They took several road trips with family and friends. They traveled extensively along the East and West Coasts of the United States. They visited Egypt, where they put their hands and feet in the Nile River, they touched the pyramids, posed in front of the Vatican in Rome, and cruised the Caribbean Islands. Visiting the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona, Spain and the olive oil factories in Sorrento, Italy proved to be especially interesting to J.D. and Sarah. J.D. loved spoiling his grandchildren, Jaylin and Jayla. He would meet them at the bus stop after school and take them to various places to show them interesting things about life. The first stop always seemed to be at the store "WAWA" for snacks. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Armellia Gibson-King, and Raymond B. Jones, Sr. His sisters Aljoyce Monk and Remona Waddy. J.D. leaves to cherish his memories: his beloved wife of 51 years, Sarah King; children, Adia and Jawara King; grandchildren, Jaylin and Jayla; brothers, Raymond B. Jones, Jr. (Deidra); Larry McPhatter; sisters, Iris Jones and Wanda Jones Evans (Larry); Special lifelong friends, Willie Hardaway; and Henry (Moon) Virden; a host of loving nieces; nephews; other family members and friends.
