Obituary of Herbert Leroy Fisher

Herbert Leroy Fisher was born April 28, 1943, in Atlantic City, New Jersey, to Eunice Grace Fisher (Bailey) and Leroy Fisher. He went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, July 14, 2021. "Herb" as he was affectionately known was raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey, and attended the Atlantic City Public Schools. He graduated from Atlantic City High School and furthered his education at Atlantic Cape Community College and graduated from Stockton State College with a Bachelor's Degree in Criminal Justice. He came from a single parent home and was the oldest of eight children. Early in life, Herb's vision was to one day be able to assist those less fortunate than himself. This vision became a reality after he returned from serving in the Vietnam War in which he received a Purple Heart and an honorable discharge. Herb's first opportunity to serve others began as a Youth Counselor and Job Developer for Atlantic Human Resources, Inc. He was then asked by John Brooks to develop jobs for the clients at the NARCO Drug Program. Herb continued his work in the social service field working in the Recreation Department for the City of Atlantic City and as a substitute teacher for the Atlantic City Board of Education. Having been one of the original organizers of the Greater Atlantic City Youth Association/Dolphins Football, he was inspired to continue to reach out and mentor the youth, counsel young adults and be a caregiver when the opportunity arose. Herb worked in the gaming industry as one of the first African American Senior Inspectors with the New Jersey State Casino Control Commission. He was the winner of the 2007 Atlantic City Host Award sponsored by the Atlantic County Freeholders and Atlantic City Chamber of Commerce. He was also influential in establishing local ministries. He was the administrator of Friendship Outreach Ministries, a board member and treasurer of the Neighborhood Life Center, a subsidiary of CWCW Ministries; and he facilitated bi-weekly fellowship and in home bible study. Herb was an active volunteer worker at Borgata Casino and Hotel. He participated in efforts to raise funds for the Red Cross and Heart Association of America drives. Working through and with the Neighborhood Life Center, Herb was able to get commitments to donate to; Sister Jean's Kitchen, Stanley Holmes Village Work Team, Greater Atlantic City Youth Association and the Buzby Village Tenant Association. He was preceded in death by: his parents, Eunice and Leroy Fisher; brother, Robert Fisher and brother-in-law, Tyrone Williams. Herb leaves to cherish his fond memories: his siblings, Howard Fisher and Lovie Gooding both of Pleasantville, New Jersey, Arnold Fisher of Elmer, New Jersey, Patricia Williams of Pomona, New Jersey, Veronica Fisher of Absecon, New Jersey, Octavia Napier (Norman) of Benton Harbor, Michigan; a special friend, Helen Shepperson; adopted son and caregiver, Lamar Fisher (Dana) of Mays Landing, New Jersey; and a host of nieces, nephews, other family members and friends. Funeral services will be Noon, Tuesday, July 27, 2021, Cathedral Grace Family Church, 3901 Filbert Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where friends may call from 11AM. Interment to follow in Atlantic County Veterans Cemetery, Estell Manor, New Jersey.
