Obituary of Darryl Matthew McCoy, Sr.

Darryl Matthew McCoy, Sr. affectionally known as "Buttons" was born September 24, 1941, to Doris Evans and Raymond McCoy. He was called home on Friday, May 28,2021, where he was peacefully surrounded by his family.

Buttons was born and raised in Atlantic City, New Jersey. He was raised by: his mother, Doris Evans; father, Raymond McCoy and stepfather, William Barker; who too was instrumental in his life. After graduating high school in 1960, he met his wife, Thelma (Thomas) McCoy and were married July 26, 1962.

Buttons was employed with Lennox China and Caesars Casino as a slot attendant. He also worked as a construction worker. He worked those jobs for a combine of 30 years before retiring. Shortly after retiring he was worked for the Atlantic City Board of Education as a cafeteria aide. At the time of his passing, he was fully retired.

When Buttons wasn't working, he loved caring for his family and enjoying life. He was well known for his basketball skills and was given the nickname "The Yard" by his peers. He was also known for being a great spades player, which he enjoyed playing with his longtime friends Vivian and McNeil Caesar.

He had a love for collecting movies and was known for making the best sweet potato pie. His big smile was infectious and everyone he made contact with, he greeted with open arms.

He was preceded in death by: his beloved wife, Thelma McCoy; children, Darryl and Keisha McCoy; parents, Doris Barker and Raymond McCoy (Mary); stepfather, William Barker; sisters, Gaye, Dawn, Ethel, Judy, and Dorothea; brothers, Harold, William, and Dennis. 

Left to cherish his unforgettable memories are; two loving daughters, Victoria and Danielle McCoy; three sons, Darryl "Dooley" McCoy, Jr., Michael Holts and Terry Holden; four granddaughters, Shaynee Hawkins (Kevin Sketers, Sr.), Keisha McCoy James (Carlos Pagan), Hope Stevens and Najah McCoy; eight great-grandchildren, Shanen, Kierra and Sierra Sketers, Analyse and Xavier Pagan, Mayah Stevens, Jecari Townsel and U'ni Hightower McCoy; beloved sisters, Rozina Barker, Sharon Howze, Brenda McCoy, Jacqueline McCoy, Katie Haskins and Renee Clanton; two brothers, Harvey Barker and Jack "Butch" McCoy; sisters-in-law, Helen Smith, Nannie Gaskins (Danny), Juanita James (Michael) and Rosemary Thomas; longtime friends, Sissy Jefferson, Vivian and McNeil Ceasar; a special nephew, Ray Coursey; and a host of nieces; nephews; other family members and friends.

A visitation will be Friday, June 4, 2021, from 9AM to 10:30AM at Greenidge Funeral Homes, Inc., 301 Absecon Boulevard, Atlantic City. A Mass of Christian burial to Celebrate his life will be 11AM Friday, June 4, 2021, at Our Lady Star of The Sea Roman Catholic Church, 2651 Atlantic Avenue, Atlantic City. Interment to follow in Holy Cross Cemetery, Mays Landing.
