Anita Eberhart

Obituary of Anita Louise Eberhart

Anita Louise Eberhart, 86, of Galloway, NJ was born to Eunice Ann Eberhart (Thompson) and Harry Charles Eberhart in Atlantic City, New Jersey on August 15, 1933. She entered into the loving arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on February 7, 2020. Anita attended the Atlantic City Public Schools and was a member of the Atlantic City High School graduating Class of 1951. She furthered her education by matriculating at Glassboro State Teachers College (Rowan University), where she received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education in 1955. Anita began her service of teaching in the Egg Harbor Township Public School District as a third grade teacher. Upon the realization that she could strengthen students' educational foundations in the early primary grades, she transitioned to first grade. During her pre-tenure years, Anita's heart went out to students with learning difficulties, especially in reading. This motivated her to obtain a Master of Arts Degree in Reading from Temple University and attain more than 15 additional credits for courses in Special Education. Her passion and dedication towards advocating for students and helping teachers/parents understand the various facets of learning disabilities along with specific remedial techniques to assist in students meeting with success, earned her a position as one of two Reading Specialists/Supervisors in the district in 1967. Anita served the students of Egg Harbor Township for 42 years, the last 26 of which she worked with the Child Study Team as a Learning Disability Specialist. Her greatest honor, while working in Egg Harbor Township, was being selected by her peers as the first recipient of The Governor's Teacher Recognition Program in March of 1986. She retired from education in June of 1997. Anita was a faithful member and Elder of Jethro Memorial Presbyterian Church. She began teaching Sunday School at the age of 10 and became Superintendent of the Sunday School at the age of 14. She served in that capacity as well as Director of Jethro's Vacation Bible School for over 50 years. Anita also initiated a tutorial program at Jethro called, "School of Success" (S.O.S.) that serviced students from the church and community. Anita loved to bring groups of people together to bond, socialize and make civic contributions to the community. In the early 1950's, she was one of the advisors to "The Cloverines," a social club for school aged girls. She was a member of "Club Charisma," in the late 1950's and in 1982, she was a Charter Member of "Club Quintessence." Anita was also a member of a travel group called "Ten to Go," The Red Hat Society, The Nubians, The Scrabble Club, various birthday groups, book clubs and the Wi-Mo-Mais Pinnacle Club. She was an active member of Phi Delta Kappa, Iota Chapter for 50 plus years until she began experiencing health challenges. Anita loved people and was in turn beloved by any who were blessed to come in contact with her. The warmth of her smile could brighten a room. Anita patterned her life after the lyrics of a song sung by Mahalia Jackson, "If I can help somebody as I travel along…then my living will not be in vain." Some of Anita's favorite pastimes were traveling, reading, recording memories on film, videos and cameras, seeing Broadway/Off-Broadway productions and playing her all-time favorite game, Scrabble. She was preceded in death by parents, Eunice and Harry Eberhart; sister, Ada Evans; and niece/Goddaughter, Verna Bailey. Anita leaves to cherish many wonderful memories: her beloved daughter, Chalon Anita Eberhart; grandson, Joseph Brio'n Eberhart; sister, Delores "Cissy" Bailey; brother-in-law, Myers "Sonny" Evans; nieces, Marla –Tiye Vieira, Vanessa Spence (Gregory) and Valerie Bailey; nephews, Michael Bailey and Hassan Ansah; Godchildren, Patrice Leatherberry and William "Billy" Johnson; and a host of other family members and friends. Funeral services will be 11AM Saturday, February 22, 2020, at Jethro Memorial Presbyterian Church, 423 North Ohio Avenue, Atlantic City, New Jersey, where friends may call from 10AM.
