Obituary of Pearl Ardella Whiting
Pearl Ardella Whiting-Hands (Della) was born August 31, 1938, in Atlantic City, New Jersey to the late Mother Eva M. Whiting-Gibson and James A. Whiting, Jr. (Crabdaddy). She passed from Earth to Glory on Friday, August 23, 2019.
Della attended Pleasantville public schools. She married Lawrence M. Hands, Sr. in 1956. From this union five children were born, Pearl L. Hands and William Hands (Bro) both of Pleasantville, Lawrence M. Hands, Jr. of Atlantic City, Ralph Hands of Pleasantville and Dwayne Hands of Atlantic City. Ardella met Charles H. Yearby in 1963 and they were together until his passing in 1998. The had one son, Charles Hands (Shaeed) of Atlantic City. Ardella has two daughters-in-law, Delores Hands of Mays Landing and the late Diane Hands of Georgia; 31 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great-grandchildren, San'nyah Barts and Amaya Hands.
Ardella was baptized at the age of 13 at Mount Zion Baptist Church by Reverend James I. Thornton, where she attended Bible Study, B.T.U. (Baptist Training Unit) and Y.P.W.W. (Young Peoples Willing Workers). Della moved to Wilmington, Delaware, where she joined Cathedral Church on the Rock Ministry, under Apostle and Prophetess Mahalia and James Price. She also visited Walking in The Word Ministry, under Prophetess Priscilla Bloodsworth. Ardella moved back to Atlantic City and lastly attended Adullam Outreach Ministry, under Elder Joseph Lewis, Sr.
Ardella was previously employed at the former Atlantic City Hospital and Cashman's Photos. She was a shuttle bus driver for the casinos and Safety School Bus Company. Trained to drive a bus by Margie Johnson, Ardella drove for Atlantic County. She did private duty work as a CNA for Art Handler's mother. She also worked for Bambino's Day Care #2 in Wilmington, Delaware.
Ardella was predeceased by: her mother, Mother Eva M. Whiting-Gibson; father, James A. Whiting, Jr. (Crabdaddy); sister, Dr. Eva M. Whiting Stewart (Baby Sis); brother, James A. Whiting, III (Duke); brothers-in-law, Timothy C. Stewart, Sr. and Eddie Stokelin, Sr.; and several nieces and nephews.
Ardella leaves to cherish fond memories: six children; 31 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren; special great-granddaughter and caregiver, Shadirah Hands; sister, Nancy Stokelin of Atlantic City; brother, Wayne F. Gibson of New York; sister/cousin, Lillie Jackson (Dolly) of Egg Harbor City; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends; and her best friend/sister, Arlean Hears, and special niece, Crystal Lewis.
Funeral services will be 11AM Friday, September 6, 2019, at Seashore Seventh Day Adventist Church, 102 Linden Avenue, Pleasantville, where friends may call from 9AM. Interment to follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville.
