Obituary of Joseph Hubert Longdon
On Sunday, March 31, 2019, JOSEPH LONGDON, passed away at the age of 90. Joe was born on October 29, 1928, in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Rosalin (Coppin) and Lionel London. He attended the Atlantic City Public School System and graduated from Atlantic City High School.
As an adult, Joe became a certified electrician and skilled carpenter exercising his craft throughout New York and New Jersey. He married his beloved Julia (Wilson) and raised two sons, Mark and Ricardo Longdon. Joe and Julie's commitment to each other was strong, and extended outside of their marriage. In oppressed social and economic times for people of color, they were able to open Julie's Grocery Store in Atlantic City.
Joe was a small man with a titanic presence. "Speak softly but carry a big stick." That was Joe, usually the shortest guy in the room with huge command. His determination and will were two reasons he was able to fight and survive in the Korean War and return home in good health. His serious demeanor and extreme intent made him a rare commodity. While playing second base in the Hap Farley's All Star Negro League baseball team, Hap noticed Joe's laser focus and provided him the opportunity to become one of the first black certified electrician working for 35 years at the Atlantic City Electric. His resolve and perseverance are legendary.
Julia and Ricardo succumbed to the strain of illness. Joe was able to remain resolute and raise a great man in Mark Longdon. Later in life, he married Carol Ann Coles and developed a soft spot for her grandson, Jamar and Charles Coles.
Joseph is predeceased by: three sisters, Viola, Veronica and Rose; two brothers, Launzel and Lionel. In his twilight years, it was father and son with the help of special nephews, Troy Battle, Byron and Ronald Branch. He is survived by: son, Mark Longdon; one sister, Millicent Bent; special daughters, Kim, Monique, Petra and Pam, and a host of nieces, nephews, other family and friends.
A special thanks to Ernestine Alexander for providing Joe care in his sensitive time
