Obituary of Annie Washington
Annie Marie Giles Washington, 79 of Atlantic City, New Jersey was born to Annie Lou and Samuel R. Giles on June 15, 1930 in Danville, Virginia. In the summer of 2016, Annie suffered a major heart attack. Then on December 18, 2018, she suffered a severe stroke. Twenty-one days after the stroke, God called Marie home to her rest on January 8, 2019. Danville shaped and taught Marie. There she attended elementary, junior high, and high school. During high school, she attended Langston High School (then an all Negro school). In 1958, during her senior year, was one of the two attendants for the Langston High School’s homecoming queen.
After completing high school, Marie began matriculation at Hampton Institute. To earn money for her education during the summers while on break from Hampton, she worked as a seasonal chambermaid in some of Atlantic City’s hotels. While living and working in Atlantic City during these summers she meet her future husband, Walter Charles Washington. She obtained her Bachelor of Arts in English Language from Hampton Institute in 1962.
On November 16, 1964, Annie Marie Giles married Walter Washington. A short time later, she moved to Atlantic City where they made a home. Upon her Atlantic City arrival she joined Union Baptist Temple. For more than fifty+ years, Annie was an active member of Union Baptist Temple. She was a member of the: Senior and Mass Choirs; Pastor's Aid and Hospitality Ministries; After School Tutorial; Board of Christian Education; and Trustee Board. Mrs. Washington was an educator who was recognized by the Governor of New Jersey in 1990 for her outstanding contributions to education. She began her teaching career after completing college at her high school alma mater, Langston High School, where she taught English.
She later taught in Atlantic City through Opportunities Industrialization Centers of America (OIC). In 1974, Annie joined Atlantic City High School’s faculty as an English Teacher. For more than 26 years she taught English to hundreds of high school sophomores, juniors and seniors. Marie retired from the Atlantic City Board of Education in 2000.
Annie was also active in the Children Cultural Arts Foundation and the Golden Circle of South Jersey Inc. Her activities within these organizations afforded her the opportunity to travel throughout the United States, Caribbean, Europe, Southeast Asia, and Middle East. As we are gathered here today to celebrate and pay respects to Annie Marie Giles Washington, let us keep in our hearts and minds the most important aspects of human life. Annie is predeceased by her parents; husband; and daughter, Caroline D. Washington; sister, Gladys Giles Nelson. She leaves to cherish her memories: son, Walter Charles Washington, Jr. of California; siblings, Samuel Giles and Mable Doggett; and a host of other family and friends.
Funeral services will be 11AM, Tuesday, January 22, 2019, Union Baptist Temple, Pennsylvania & Drexel Avenues, Atlantic City, where friends may call from 9AM. Interment to follow in Greenwood Cemetery, Pleasantville.
