Obituary of Stanley Harewood

Stanley Sylvester Harewood, age eighty-nine, of Atlantic City, New Jersey went home to be with the Lord on Sunday, June 24, 2018, with his loving family by his side. Stanley or “ Shady” to his family and friends, was born October 7, 1928, in Atlantic City, New Jersey to Edna (nee Greenidge) and William Harewood, both immigrants from  Barbados, West Indies. Stanley attended the Atlantic City Public Schools and graduated from Atlantic City High School.

Stanley trained as a cook early in his life in a number of Atlantic City’s famed hotels and was lastly employed as a chef with the Sands Hotel & Casino before retiring.

Stanley loved the Lord and was a member of Faith Baptist Church in Pleasantville, N.J. His favorite scripture was the 23rd Psalm.  At Faith Baptist Church he loved singing and being a member of the Male Chorus.

His was passionate and skilled in constructing model boats.  He often presented his finished works to his family and friends -- especially his pastor, Rev. Milton L. Hendricks.

Stanley loved listening to family stories and giving cooking advice to our young aspiring chefs in the family. Dad loved birthday celebrations. He really enjoyed his 80th birthday celebration at the famed B Smith’s Restaurant in Washington, D. C.

He is predeceased by: his loving wife, Bernice (nee’ Stewart) Harewood; parents, Edna and William Harewood; brothers, Granville Harewood and William “Billy” Harewood; sisters, Elise Cook and Carmen Mosley.

He is survived by: sister, Gwendolyn Harewood Franklin of Atlantic City; children, Stanley, Jr. (Jaqueline) of Suitland, MD, Brian Harewood and Diane Holley both of Ft. Washington, M.D, Gail Grant of Yeadon, PA, LaVedia Davis, Patrice Holts and Yvonne Richardson all of Atlantic City, N.J.; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grand children; and a host of other family and friends.

Dad was a humble man, who loved his family & the Lord.

Funeral services will be 11AM, Friday, July 6, 2018, Faith Baptist Church 829 Tilton Road, Pleasantville, New Jersey, where friends may call from 9AM. Interment to follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville.
