Bernetha Matthews

Obituary of Bernetha Matthews

Bernetha Weekes Matthews, daughter of the late Helen and Rawson Weekes, was born on December 11, 1925 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Bernetha was taken into the arms of the angels to join her parents, brother, husband, son, and daughter in Heaven, on Sunday, January 14, 2018. She was 92 years old and she outlived all of her family.

Bernetha was affectionately known as "Neet", "Queen B", "Mom", "Mother", "Mrs. Bernetha", and "Mrs. Matthews". Bernetha spent her entire life in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She was educated through the Atlantic City school system. Upon graduating, she explored many work experiences, but God guided her to seek employment with the Atlantic City Board of Education at Indiana Avenue School until her retirement.

Bernetha's mother died when she was two years old. Her father Rawson raised his son, the late James, and daughter, Bernetha, with the help of the Longdon family. He took his children to St. Augustine's Episcopal Church, and he made sure that both of his children received their religious education at the church. She attended St. Augustine's Episcopal Church until the Lord called her home.

Bernetha met and married the love of her life, the late Robert Matthews. Their union lasted over 50 years. From this union, two beautiful children were born; the late Robert W. Matthews, and the late Rene Helen Matthews-Addison.

Bernetha was dedicated to her church community until her illness prevented her from being so active. She was a devoted Episcopalian who faithfully supported the parish life at St. Augustine's Episcopal Church. She was baptized, confirmed, attended Sunday School services, active Episcopal Church Woman, and served on the Altar Guild. She believed and always stated, "I can do all things through Christ which strengthens me." Philippians 4:13.

Bernetha was well respected by many. She leaves to cherish her memories: sisters-in-law, Doris Weekes, Betty Pruitt, Phyllis Cooke, and Patricia Patterson; brothers-in-law, Donald Patterson, Glover Patterson, and Earl Patterson; daughter-in-law, Yvonne Matthews; nieces: Yvonne (Eddie) Sturges, Wanda (the late Stuart) Davis, Monique (Jimmie) Gresham; nephews, Michael (Rod) Weekes, James Weekes, Jr.; grandchildren, Richard Green, Andrew Green; godchildren, Michele Farell, Byron Branch; great nieces, Aixa Weekes, Rykiel Weekes, Braylyn Davis; great nephews, Ariel Weekes, Brandon Davis; great-great nephew, Jaishaun Sturges; cousins Adena (Winsley), Victoria (Melvin) Johnson; and a host of family and friends. We will miss her dearly.

Sorrowfully Submitted,

The Family
