Obituary of Wilma Badgley

Wilma Badgley (nee’ Gist) went home to the Lord on Sunday, December 10, 2017.  Wilma was born on December 19, 1928, to the late Luceil (nee’ Bious) and James Roger Gist.  She was born in Enoree, South Carolina, but was a life-long resident of Atlantic City, N.J. She graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1947, and enjoyed attending her many class reunions. She was a faithful member of Second Baptist Church and gave many devoted years to the Host/Hostess Ministry.

During her younger years she was a popular waitress at the old Sun Ray Drug Store in Atlantic City. Later, she was employed by the New Jersey Unemployment Office, where she met her very good friend Doris Graves. She then gained tenured and retired as an employee of the City of Atlantic City Tax Collector’s Office.

Wilma had a heart of gold and an affectionate personality that attracted friends from far and near.  All of them knew she genuinely cared for them.  Her special friends, who joked, laughed, traveled and interacted with her included: Doris Graves, and the late Marionette Harris and Gladys Allen.  She also had “good-time” moments with her sister in-law, Dr. Barbara L. Saunders.  Wilma enjoyed life to its fullest. She was proud to have been a member of the Daughter of Isis and Golden Circle. She especially loved her membership with “Pal Gals”, a dance troop of senior women, who performed dance skits throughout the county. Early in her life, she was a talented seamstress, whose skills were showcased in the many outfits she designed for her daughters.  She was stylist dresser, who was never without her bling of rings that she wore every day.  One of her favorite past times was shopping on QVC.

Wilma was a caring and wonderful wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She was a loving wife to the late, Willie Lee Badgley.  She adored her daughters and devoted all of her time to ensure they got the best of everything.  Wilma made special efforts to spoil her grandson and great grandson.

The family loved Wilma.  She will be incredibly missed by all who knew and loved her. She leaves to cherish her memories: daughters, Deborah Saunders and Diane Saunders, both of Northfield, NJ, Barbara Jean Saunders, of Atlantic City, NJ; and step-daughter, Irene Badgely, of Woodbridge, VA; grandson, William Kaighn Saunders, of Atlantic City, NJ; great-grandson, Yashir Nixon, of Atlantic City, NJ; sister-in-law, Dr. Barbara L. Saunders, of Philadelphia, PA; and a host of other relatives and friends.

Funeral Services will be 11AM, Saturday, December 16, 2017, at the Second Baptist Church, 110 Rev. I.S. Cole Plaza, Atlantic City, NJ 08401, where friends may call from 9:00 a.m. Interment to follow in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville, NJ.
