Charlie was born to Frances Hurst on June 20, 1942 in Reform, Alabama. Charlie was the third of eleven children. He was educated in the Reform, Alabama school system, where he enjoyed playing basketball and football at Hopewell High school. While there, he attended and became a member of the First Baptist Church. Charlie moved to Camden, New Jersey in the late 1960's, where he met and married Caroline Webster. Together, they raised four children (Dana Lynn, Charlie Earl, Jr., Kelly Rochelle, and Joy Masika, before Caroline's passing. Charlie worked in the construction/building industry as a mason worker and a driver of cement trucks for Camden Lime Company. Later in his life, he met Anita Castillo. He helped her raise her son, Stephen Carter as his own, and they were married on December 29, 1988. Charlie is preceded in death by: son, Charlie Earl, Jr.; mother, Frances Hurst; brothers, Edgar and Harvey Hurst; sister, Sally Hart. Charlie leaves behind to cherish his memories: wife, Anita Castillo; sons, Gabby Cummingham and Stephen Carter (Cynthia); daughters, Dana, Kelly, and Joy Hurst; six brothers; one sister; nineteen grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; long time family friend, Mickey Pritchett; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other family members. A funeral service will be 11AM Monday, September 12, 2022 at New Fellowship UAME Church, 718-722 Chestnut Street, Camden, New Jersey where friends my view from 9AM-11AM.
