Hilton grew up in Atlantic City where he went to school and worked years with other family members in his dad's ice and coal business. As a young man Hilton was called to service in the Navy where he served honorably during World War II. Hilton loved sports all of his life, and was an excellent tennis player. He was coach and captain of the seaside tennis club in Atlantic City for many years; the club won numerous awards.

He worked for years at the Atlantic City Press in the early morning hours, a construction Forman for Peterson Construction Company. He was nicknamed "Killer" after a song in Jazz called, Killer Joe.

He enjoyed Jazz music. His nickname also came from how hard he worked those men at the construction site; where he worked harder than them. Anyone who ever knew Hilton where always laughing in his presence as he had a sense of humor that kept you laughing all the time. He loved Jesus and family.
