Obituary of Leroy Lucas
Early Saturday Morning on March 31st God told my father Leroy Stanley Lucas that his Five Year Battle with Cancer was no longer his Battle to Fight.
Before he was my Dad he was the first born child of Geraldine Vera Washington - Lucas and Leroy Joseph Lucas. My Dad wasn't too lonely being the only child because Cousin Sabrina was his Honorary Sister. His only child status changed when he became Big Brother to Sean and Vincent.
Being that Atlantic City is only 40 Blocks it's no surprise that my Dad would meet Donna; who would become my Mother. You would think I was their first child but I wasn't. First came Leroy than came me Gina. I only knew my Dad either as Dad or Leroy but too many of his friends especially his closest friend Louis he was, "Butchie."
The most important thing I know about my Dad is when God told him, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God." Philippians 4:6. My Dad heard and listen to become a Man of God.
Being a Man of God meant to my Dad being among his people; sharing not only his faith but his own personal testimony of the grace and favor God bestowed on him. My Father did exactly that as a volunteer for Sister Jean’s Webster Kitchen at Victory First Presbyterian Deliverance Church. Sister Jean’s Webster Kitchen provided food for the body and faith for the spirit to the less fortunate of Atlantic City and the surrounding areas.
My Father volunteered at Sister Jean’s for many, many years. I remember surprising my Dad outside of Sister Jean’s and I could tell he was crying. I said to my Dad, “Dad, who I got to Fight today?!” My Dad started laughing and replied, “No one Gina.” Those tears were of my Father bearing witness to Isiah 58:10, “And if thou draw out thy soul to the hungry, and satisfy the afflicted soul; then shall thy light rise obscurity, and thy darkness be as the noonday.”
