Obituary of Dorothy Hughey
Dorothy M. (Groce) Hughey was born June 27, 1941 in Atlantic City, New Jersey. She departed this life on September 19, 2017. Dorothy was the only child of Dorothy M. (Parks) and Samuel H. Groce. Dorothy spent her early years growing up in Atlantic City, New Jersey and was educated in the Atlantic City public Schools.
Dorothy met and married James Hughey.
Dot or Dottie as she was known by her family and friends, was a very spirited person who loved and lived her life to the fullest. Her love of music and dancing resulted in her participation yearly in the “Oldies” cabaret which brought together many family and friends from all over to the Soldiers Home in Atlantic City for a night of food, fun and dancing. She enjoyed travelling and visiting her friends and relatives across the United States. She loved to prepare food for family and friends as well. Like her Mother, her pound cakes were well known and she often carried them when travelling.
Dorothy lived in Boston, Massachusetts for many years working for Bradlees Department Store. She made many friends there and often went back to visit with her co-workers and friends. Dottie later transferred to Bradlees in Pleasantville, New Jersey until the close of the store. She later went to work for Tropicana Casino and Resort as a cashier.
Dorothy had a big heart and could always be depended on for anything in time of need. If you needed a dollar, a place to stay, or something to eat, she was there to help and lend a hand in any way she could. Although Dorothy had no biological children of her own, her love of children brought many to her home for her special love, support and guidance.
Dorothy was a member of St. James AME Church and served on the Usher Board and Food Ministries. She was awarded a certificate of Membership in 2006 from the Church Golden Age Club for fifty plus years of faithful service to the church. Dorothy remained a devoted member until her passing.
She was predeceased by: parents, Dorothy M. (Parks) and Samuel H. Groce; husband, James Hughey.
Dorothy leaves to cherish her memories: her cousins, many special friends, Godchildren, nieces, nephews and others whose lives she graced.
