Obituary of Tallie Thomas
Tallie Thomas, 83, of Atlantic City, died Tuesday, July 18, 2017, at home with his devoted wife of 40 years, Wilburtha "Bert" Thomas, by his side.
Known by so many as "one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet", Tallie was born on June 10, 1934, to the late William and Ophelia (Williams) Thomas.
Tallie attended Atlantic City public schools and graduated from Atlantic City High School in 1952. He worked many jobs as a young father, but eventually would attend Temple University where he received a Bachelors of Science in Pharmacy. Tallie was the only Black man in his class in 1960. He gave almost 35 years of service to AtlantiCare as pharmacist, senior staff Registered Pharmacist and eventually became Pharmacist in Charge. He enjoyed his co-workers and was loved by all who worked with him. Even after retirement, he became a pool pharmacist, working when others were on vacation or sick leave.
In 2007, he was honored by AtlantiCare's Black Heritage Committee as a Trailblazer in his field. Tallie was the first Black pharmacist at Atlantic City Medical Ceneter. He was hired early on by African-American physicians in the city who opened Ethical Pharmacy on Arctic Avenue.
Tallie was an active member of Jethro Memorial Presbyterian Church for many years, where he served as a Trustee, Assistant Treasurer and choir member. He also served as Treasurer of the local NAACP for several years.
Family and friends remember Tallie as a lover of travel, a serious jazz enthusiast, and avid sports fan. He enjoyed cruising as he had been on at least 10 cruises, often attending the Cape May Jazz Festival and local jazz concerts. He loved cheering his favorite teams and athletes in football, basketball, and baseball. He will also be remembered as a very "snazzy" dresser.
In addition to his parents, Tallie was predeceased by: brother, Rev. William Thomas; stepson, Craig Sharpe (aka, Halim Salaam); and nephew, William "Billy" Thomas, Jr.
He leaves to cherish his memories: his wife, Wilburtha "Bert" Sharpe- Thomas; daughters, Turiya S. Abdur-Raheem (fka, Lillian Thomas) (Hassan), Karen Brundidge (Carl); son, Talib Abdul Aleem (fka, Tallie Thomas); a special sister-in-law, Jackie Sharpe; step-daughter, Darella Sharpe, sister-in-law, Delores; niece, Sharon and great-niece, Kia; 12 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren, 5 godchildren, his special fun-loving Jethro Birthday Club friends of many years, many co-workers, and a host of other relatives and friends.
