Obituary of Reathy Ward
Reathy M. Ward, age 93, of Atlantic City, made her Heavenly transition on Tuesday, April 25, 2017, in Absecon, NJ. On September 13, 1923, “Reat”, as she was affectionately called, was born to Elizabeth (Hilderbrand) and Will Hart in Reidsville, North Carolina. After attending school, she relocated to Atlantic City, where she met and married the late Richard “Dick” Ward. Though she bore no children of her own, the abundant love in her heart allowed her to “mother” many daughters and sons, opening her house for sleepovers, summer visits, and fun! Her wit and humor, her style and grace, and the joy in her laughter made her a great sister who was at times more like a mother to her brothers and sister. Her warmth, understanding, and non-judgmental ways, made her one of the favorite aunts of all. Reat was a rose in the center of a garden; a lady surrounded by the love of family and many friends.
Early in her career, she was a seamstress working in a local sewing factory. After leaving there, she was employed by Resorts Hotel & Casino in Atlantic City, New Jersey as an Environmental Specialist. Everyone at Resorts grew to love Reat and to appreciate the joy she brought with her everywhere she’d go. She was a great neighbor too, looking out for the Farmer, Gist & Hevalow families, as well as her sister-in-law, Liz, down the block. They all shared good food, a genuine love for one another, and lots of laughs. On any afternoon, she could be found ironing those crisp, white shirts while watching TV or cooking a meal and baking those wonderful cakes. She did everything with style and with love! She was one-of-a-kind!!
Reathy is predeceased by: her husband, Richard “Dick” Ward; her parents, Elizabeth (Hilderbrand) and Will Hart; and brothers, Nathaniel, William, Frank and Roscoe Hart; and sister, Annabel. She will be dearly missed by: brothers, Robert Hart, and Lincy “LC” and his wife, Carolan Hart; caretaker and friend, Aster “Eddie” Westry; goddaughter, Wanda Little; and a host of nieces, nephews, family and friends.
