Patricia Yvette (Hurst) Thomas, a native of Atlantic City, New Jersey was born July 18, 1944. She was the fifth child of the late Stonewall Hurst and Mary Agusta Queen. Patricia, affectionately known as Pat, transitioned her task here on earth, in the early morning of April 9, 2018, at the Atlantic City Regional Medical Center, Atlantic City, New Jersey.
A lifelong resident of Atlantic City, Pat attended New Jersey Avenue School, Central Junior High School and Atlantic City High School. At Atlantic City High School, Pat met her future husband, Alfred “Danny” Thomas. She was a member of the high school choir, which she greatly enjoyed. Pat always had a desire to become a teacher. Both her sister and brother were teachers in the Philadelphia, PA School system. Pat was accepted into and graduated from the first historically black college, Cheyney University in Cheyney, PA. During her time as an undergraduate, she became a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She remained an active member for over fifty years.
During her thirty-five years of service as an educator with the Atlantic City Board of Education, thirty-three of those years were taught at Indiana Avenue School. Pat has taught a number of students who have made her proud. She had the pleasure of working with dedicated teachers who were at the pinnacle of their profession and took great pride in being a mentor to several first year teachers.
Pat was a devoted member of St. James A.M.E. Church for over forty years. Over the years, she served in several capacities including Church Steward, Trustee and a member of the Scholarship Committee. She loved her church and was a proud member of spiritual leadership of Rev. Dr. James Coaxum, III.
Pat enjoyed having great conversations with her friends. Her favorite hobbies included shopping at Boscov’s and QVC, reading, watching Family Feud, soap operas and judge shows, and doing crossword puzzles. Pat was a charter member of the Atlantic City Alumnae Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated. She was also a member of the National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa, Inc. (Iota Chapter) and a former member of Jack and Jill of America, Inc.
Pat was predeceased in death by: her parents, Stonewall Hurst and Mary Augusta Queen; her brothers, Thomas Matthews and Robert Matthews Jr.
She leaves behind to celebrate her life and treasure her memories, her loving, caring and supportive husband, Alfred (Danny) Thomas; son, Lamont Thomas; daughter, Tara Lake (Woody), brother, Walter Hurst (Ann); sister, Mary Lucas (Ulysses), grandchildren, Sanai and Bryce Lake; God-daughter, Riya Carpenter and a host of sorority sisters, family and friends.
Funeral Services will be 11AM, Saturday, April 14, 2018, St. James A.M.E. Church, 101 N. New York Avenue, Atlantic City, where friends may call from 9AM-10:30AM. Delta Sorority Rites will follow visitation. Interment in Atlantic City Cemetery, Pleasantville.
